In preparation for the 2026 Local Government Elections, the Electoral Commission of South Africa (IEC) convened the Matatiele Party Liaison Committee (PLC) Meeting at the Maggie Tsiu-Resha Building, Council Chambers.
Chairing the meeting, Municipal Manager Adv. F.M. Lepheana, in his capacity as the Municipal Electoral Officer (MEO), reaffirmed the Municipality’s support for the IEC in ensuring free, fair and peaceful elections. He called on all political parties and stakeholders to uphold peace, stability and cooperation throughout the electoral period.
Meanwhile, IEC Alfred Nzo Regional Manager Arnold Mbaligontsi presented the special votes application report, confirming that a total of 5,915 applications were received, of which 5,014 were approved and 117 were declined.
He further explained that special voting allows registered South African voters who are unable to vote at their designated voting stations on Election Day to cast their ballots early. Special voting is scheduled for 2 and 3 November 2026, either through home visits for eligible voters or at their designated voting stations.
As the countdown to the elections continues, all political parties and stakeholders are encouraged to promote peace, respect and stability to support a peaceful electoral process in Matatiele.
