Matatiele Local Municipality, in collaboration with the Eastern Cape Parks and Tourism Agency (ECPTA), embarked on the Alfred Nzo Discovery Week, an initiative aimed at promoting tourism awareness and encouraging young people to explore and showcase tourism opportunities within their communities.
The programme targeted Grade 11 learners from four schools, namely Matatiele Senior Secondary School, Maluti Senior Secondary School, Tholang Senior Secondary School and Khanya Naledi Senior Secondary School. As part of the programme, learners were introduced on to the tourism sector and participated in a competition where they are required to produce Vlogs promoting tourism attractions and destinations in their respective communities. The learners are working in pairs and are encouraged to use creativity and digital media to showcase the tourism potential of Matatiele.
The completed videos are expected to be presented by the end of October 2026, with learners standing a chance to win prizes for their outstanding work. Project Manager of Exploring with Makhoza, Zimasa Ndaba (Makhoza), said the initiative is driven by her passion for tourism and her desire to inspire young people to embrace tourism as an opportunity and actively participate in promoting Matatiele as a tourism destination. She further encouraged learners to take pride in the fact that they are studying tourism and to use their skills to contribute to the growth and promotion of tourism in the area.
