International Literacy Day Commemoration
The Matatiele Local Municipality, in collaboration with the Department of Sport, Recreation, Arts and Culture (DSRAC), hosted the International Literacy Day commemoration at Mvenyane, Ward 21.
On behalf of Honourable Councillor Ms. K. Mavela, Mr. Njiva officially welcomed all attendees with warm remarks and encouraged everyone to feel at home.
International Literacy Day is celebrated annually to remind the world that literacy is a fundamental human right and a matter of dignity. The observance not only highlights the importance of reading and writing, but also underscores the significance of literacy to individuals, communities and societies at large. Furthermore, it urges governments, schools, non-governmental organisations and civil society to work towards improving literacy rates and to reflect on the remaining challenges. Literacy is regarded as the foundation for a more literate and sustainable society, and is intrinsically linked to poverty reduction, gender equality, health, employment and quality education.
Ms. Nomthandazo Myeka from the Department of Correctional Services expressed her gratitude for the invitation to witness and motivate learners, parents and educators. She indicated that the Department also encourages offenders to write, noting that three inmates have successfully published their books. She further encouraged parents to continue motivating their children to read and write, and not to wait until they are incarcerated to discover their talents.
As part of the programme, high school learners were given an opportunity to deliver prepared speeches, while primary school learners participated in spelling and word-rearrangement activities.
