MUNICIPAL LAW ENFORCEMENT TEAM CONDUCTS STREET TRADING COMPLIANCE OPERATIONS
Law Enforcement Teams from Alfred Nzo District Municipality and Matatiele Local Municipality, together with the South African Police Service (SAPS), conducted operations in the streets of the town to ensure that street traders are operating legally and complying with the relevant municipal by-laws and regulations.
These operations form part of the Municipality’s efforts to formalise and regulate street trading, while balancing the livelihoods of traders with the need to maintain an orderly, safe and accessible town.
A few weeks ago, the Municipality held engagements with street traders and their representative organisations. During these engagements, traders raised the need for a clear and regulated permit system that would enable those who meet the requirements to trade legally within designated areas.
Following these engagements, the Municipality initiated the necessary processes to formalise and authorise the issuing of permits to street traders.
The current enforcement operations are therefore aimed at ensuring compliance with the process that was communicated and agreed upon. Traders who have been instructed to obtain the required permits are urged to do so and to ensure that they operate within the applicable municipal regulations.
The permit system is intended to assist the Municipality in creating a more organised trading environment, improving accountability, managing public spaces, and addressing challenges relating to congestion, cleanliness, safety and accessibility.
