Youth Crime Prevention Programme Promotes Sports Against Crime in Matatiele

The Department of Community Safety: Alfred Nzo District, in partnership with Matatiele Local Municipality and various stakeholders, hosted a Youth Crime Prevention Programme under the theme “Sports Against Crime” as part of the 2026 Youth Month Commemoration.

The event took place on at North End Stadium (Ward 19)in Matatiele, bringing together young people, government departments, law enforcement agencies, community structures and development partners to raise awareness about crime prevention and youth empowerment through sport.

Delivering the welcoming remarks, Councillor Booth Ward 19 encouraged young people to use sport as a positive tool for personal growth, discipline and community development. She emphasized the importance of making responsible choices and participating in initiatives that contribute to safer and more united communities.

The day also featured sporting activities, providing young people with a platform to engage in healthy recreation while promoting unity, discipline and social cohesion. The programme concluded with an awards ceremony recognising participants and partners who contributed to the success of the event.

The initiative reaffirmed the commitment of government and community stakeholders to using sport as a tool to combat crime, empower young people and build safer communities throughout the Alfred Nzo District.
