The Matatiele Local Municipality recently hosted the Mayoral Cup Awards 2025 at the Fresh Produce Market on 20 September 2025. The outstanding performers who walked away with the Matatiele Local 2025 Mayoral Cup Champion titles were Matat Netball Club from Ward 2, Future Stars Football Club from Ward 25, and Ingwe Ladies’ Soccer from Ward 1. The intention of the awards ceremony was to celebrate all participants from ward to cluster levels and the final level; at the same time, this gesture highlights the municipality's commitment to promoting sports development and grooming talent in rural areas. In his welcome address, Mayor Councillor Motlalepula Stuurman noted that the tournament has a long history, but this year marked a turning point as, for the first time, players were scouted to form a squad that will represent the municipality in various tournaments. “The journey begins in April where 27 at the ward level did not end on the 16th of June where the team who made it from the cluster level were fighting for Championship title on the day cited Mayor Stuurman. “This year journey began in April, when 27 wards competed at the ward level, and continued until the 16th of June, when the teams that advanced from the cluster level fought for the championship title” state Mayor Stuurman. Furthermore, Mayor Stuurman committed that the Council would continue to host the Mayoral Cup Tournament. “This year participants will not only receive prizes, but 23 scouted players will also receive support to groom their careers in sport the journey continues,” said Mayor Stuurman. Participants from the ward level received playing equipment, including poles and balls, while cluster participants walked away with gym equipment to support their continued growth and excellence in sport. The 2025 Champions took home a package consisting of R5,000 in cash, tracksuits, gold medals, and a trophy, recognizing their outstanding achievement. #BuildingBetterMatatieleTogether
