The Matatiele Local Municipality in collaboration with the Province of the Eastern Cape Community Safety, Alfred Nzo District Municipality, Matatiele Policing Precinct (SAPS), Department of Health, Social Development, National Prosecuting Authority (NPA), Mochochonono, Isibindi, and Thuthuzela launched a Social Crime Prevention Awareness Campaign in Area C, Ward 20.

The programme aimed to equip community members with knowledge on crime prevention, addressing issues like GBV and substance abuse. It is part of the Department of Community Safety Eastern Cape’s initiative, “MUSA UKUTHULA KUSONAKAL”, which means promoting community engagement and safety, encouraging communities to prevent crime.

Cllr Mokhesi, Ward 20 councillor, highlighted that the area has one of the highest crime rates and expressed hope that the programme will make a significant impact. “This programme will help us tackle crime and make our community safer,” she said.

An overview of crime in the area by SAPS revealed alarming statistics on murder, shooting, stabbing, rape, assault, and break-ins. The area has seen a surge in violent crimes, with murder and assault cases increasing. The community has identified 10 hotspots, including illegal alcohol-selling places, contributing to crime.

The campaign focuses on social crime prevention, addressing issues like GBV and substance abuse, aiming to empower residents with skills to prevent crime and promote safety.
