Matatiele to honour Alfred Nzo through a liberation route marathon.
Matatiele local municipality has dedicated 2019 as the year to commemorate the fore-runners of the struggle movement through its liberation route. The intention is to pause and remember the triumph of the human spirit as showcased by our heroes, whilst ensuring that their spirit lives-on. Named after Matatiele born struggle stalwart, Baphethuxolo Alfred Nzo, the marathon will commence in Qacha’s Nek boarder gate (Lesotho) and finish at North End stadium in Matatiele (SA).
The main purpose of this country to country marathon is to ensure that Qacha’s Nek identity as a political route is sustained. Promotion of economic development relations between Lesotho and South Africa (Matatiele) and preservation of the cultural, political and historical heritage shared by the two countries is achieved.
“For us this is a vital way to commemorate (SA) Matatiele-born political heroes who sacrificially traversed the Qacha’s Nek, to liberate the people and further attract the world to a true African experience offered by Matatiele municipality. This marathon will give runners an opportunity to experience our unique natural landscape, dwellings, animal life and diversity”, said Matatiele local municipality Mayor, Cllr. Momelezi Mbedla. The marathon has the three categories namely: 42.2KM, 21.1KM, 10KM, 5KM and 1.1KM for ages 06 years to 60, categorised according to kilometres.
