Protest action suspended in Matatiele

The Matatiele Local Municipality Mayor Cllr. Momelezi Mbedla and the Route 56 Matatiele Forum this afternoon announced the suspension of the roads related protest action.

Speaking at a joint meeting between Matatiele Local Municipality, R56 Forum leadership and the Department of Roads & Public Works (DRPW), the R56 Forum Chairperson Nhlanhla Dhlamini said although they still have areas of concern, the people of Matatiele have decided to allow things to go back to normal. “After a very difficult discussion with the community members, we have decided to suspend the action and let the DRPW teams on site continue with the maintenance of our roads. We will continue negotiating in good faith to resolve all outstanding issues”, said Dhlamini.

Earlier today, the Mayor led a delegation of Councillors, management and officials, visiting sites where DRPW is busy with road maintenance. The Mayor introduced the working teams and the machinery on-site, to the community. This, as part of a short term intervention to the roads debacle in Matatiele.

“There are issues that we can resolve in the short term like blading of the roads and other things, but there are those that need planning and can be realized in a medium to long term. We want to ensure Matatiele communities that we will work with all stakeholders to address the challenges we are facing’, said Cllr. Momelezi Mbedla.

The municipality will soon organize a meeting between the DRPW, Office of the Premier and the Forum to negotiate the way forward and address other grievances.

From Monday this week, traffic was brought to a standstill in town and nearby areas and shop owners forced to close down their operations, when protest actions resurfaced.
